두리안 수출 60% 이상 급감, 상인이 없어 메콩 델타 농민들 길가에서 판매

In the first quarter of 2025, Vietnam's durian exports experienced a sharp decline, reaching only 26,860 tons with a value of USD 98.2 million. Compared to the same period in 2024, this represents a drop of 52.7% in volume and 61.1% in value. Notably, the Chinese market—which accounts for 90% of Vietnam’s durian export revenue—reduced imports by 78.3%, down to only USD 49.5 million.

The main cause of this drop is China's tightening of quality control regulations on imported agricultural products. Specifically, they now require certification proving that shipments are free from the banned yellow dye "Vàng O." Many Vietnamese shipments failed to meet this requirement and were sent back. Additionally, some shipments were found to contain cadmium—a harmful heavy metal—and banned artificial coloring. Increased competition from other countries like Laos, Cambodia, and Indonesia entering the Chinese market has added further pressure.

These export difficulties have directly affected farmers in Vietnam's Mekong Delta. Domestic durian prices have plummeted, and sales have slowed, forcing many farmers to sell their produce by the roadside. With fewer traders buying, some businesses have suffered losses and failed to complete contracts. In some cases, middlemen offered higher prices, prompting farmers to cancel deals with companies and sell elsewhere, further destabilizing the supply chain.

In response, many exporters have shifted to selling frozen durians to reduce risks and maintain revenue. However, developing new markets and ensuring strict quality compliance remain major challenges that require attention from both the agricultural sector and producers.
